Fujichrome Sensia 100

A couple weeks ago I tried Fujichrome Sensia 100 in my Yashica Electro 35 GT, after I found its tonality rather pleasing in the Color Efex emulation. Well, it turned out I didn’t like it so much in reality. But this might also have been due to the fact that the Yashica’s lens isn’t colour corrected, and I was using the Epson V330 scanner which isn’t up to the task of scanning slide film.

Wowzers! It’s already September? Well, fitting the rather gray and dull early autumn weather we’re currently experiencing, here’s a recent shot taken on Lucky 100 b&w film.

A few weeks ago, I realised that my Yashica Electro 35 GT’s meter wasn’t giving me any readings anymore. The battery chek light was working, but the meter wasn’t and the shutter operated at its 1/500 sec default speed. So I put it aside, planning to take a look at the electronics once I’d have the spare time to do so.

In the meantime, I was gathering information about possible repairs or replacements, and it was clear that I would have to spend at least 100 € to get a camera that is working and will continue working for [...]

Sad news … my Yashica Electro 35 died …

Today, I noticed that my Yashica Electro 35 GT is dead. The electronics stopped working and the shutter defaults to 1/500 sec.

I first noticed this on sunday, when I was shooting a fresh roll of Kodak BW400CN inside in dim light. The shutter didn’t sound like it was exposing long enough. Yesterday, I picked up the developed roll of Sensia 100 I shot in the past weeks, and about ten pictures, all taken inside, turned out either underxposed or plain black.

As you may be aware, I’ve been developing a love for film recently and been rather negligent towards my M8. Currently, I’m always carrying with me my new Contax T (see Camerapedia for details) loaded with slide film, which at the moment is Fujichrome Velvia 50. Today I picked up the prints and scans of that roll of XP2 I was shooting with my Yashica Electro 35 GT last month – and I’m already in love with that film! It’s got great tonal range, and is incredibly versatile. You can shoot it anywhere between 200 and 800 ISO without having to adjust the processing, and you can push it below or beyond anywhere from 50 to 3200. First batch of scans from my 35 GT

Okay, here they are! It took me a little longer than intended until I finally got to scanning some of the pictures I took with my recently acquired Yashica Electro 35 GT rangefinder film camera, but now I finally got my ass up and scanned the pictures I liked best. All were scanned directly from 13 x 18 (5 x 7) prints with 600 dpi and post-processed in Lightroom 3 beta 2. The film used was a FujiFilm Superia X-TRA 400.

No, it’s not what it sounds like, and I didn’t buy it at Toys”Я”Us In fact, it’s a 1969 Yashica Electro 35 GT – one of the many fixed-lens semi-automatic rangefinder cameras produced in the 60s and 70s before SLRs became the ruling species on planet Photography.
