Out and about with the E-P1 + Cosmicar 25/1.4

As I already mentioned, I’ve slapped the little Cosmicar/Pentax 25mm f/1.4 C-mount lens onto my E-P1 again — and what can I say, I’m as thrilled again by this lens as I was the first, the second, the third and all consecutive times I used it. On the E-P1, it’s simply magical!

There’s something about the colours the way the  lens renders them combined with the way the E-P1 reproduces them that make this special combination so unique. From all the lenses I’ve used on the E-P1, this is the one I enjoy the most — and yes, its optical imperfections have a good deal to do with that!

But before I lose myself in ongoing ravings about this little, inexpensive gem, let pictures speak! :-)

New MFT products announced, available for pre-order

Last week, Olympus announced three new Micro Four Thirds cameras, the E-P3, the E-PL3 and the E-PM3. (For full coverage of announcements, previews and reviews please see 43rumors.com.)

Along with these cameras, two completely new, high-quality prime lenses were announced: The M.Zuiko 12mm f/2 wide-angle, and the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 portrait lens.
Both lenses are now avaible for pre-order at B&H Photo. The 12mm f/2.0 can be pre-ordered for US-$ 799.99, the 45mm f/1.8 for US-$ 399.99.

Leica M8 “optimization of internal processes”

The new firmware v. 2.014 for the Leica M8 adds support for the new Super Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 lens, as well as “optimization of internal processes”. Some users claimed higher ISO settings would show less noise now, others claimed the image preview was rendering faster now. Personally, I could not observe any changes in the camera’s behaviour since I installed the new firmware.

Of course, M8 users have been wondering what this “optimization” really was, and now we have an answer. A keen rff user dared to inquire with Leica, and here’s the reply he’s got:

In response to your question, there are no quantifiable examples of a process being optimised, other than the camera as a whole operating faster, smoother and with fewer glitches.

The processes that have been optimised are coding processes, these are running in the cameras CPU and dictate how the camera behaves and operates at a fundamental level, this code has been subtlety changed in the firmware update to remove areas identified over the cameras lifetime as problematic, and introduce new code where it has been deemed necessary by Leica’s electronics technicians.

I’ve put the little Cosmicar/Pentax 25/1.4 TV lens on the E-P1 again — this lens is just pure joy! I love its soft colour and contrast, the crazy bokeh, the inherent optical shortcomings … but I think I said that many times before already :-)
