E-P2 quick review by dpreview

Holy lion of zion! You guys surely took your time! The E-P2 was released when? Oh yeah – back in January, right. Let me do the math here, that’s … three months. Ah, whatever … better late than never, right?

So what they did is reviewing the E-P2 in their new ‘quick review’ format, which was developed for models which are merely updates to a previous model, and thus do not stand apart much. The quick review concentrates on the main differences between the ealier model and the one in question – in this case on the plug-in EVF, the accessory port and the firmware changes.

The major upgrade from the E-P1 is the high-res electronic viewfinder, which makes for the 3% difference in dpreview’s rating of 69% for the E-P2 compared to 66% for the E-P1.

But in fact all this was public knowledge already, so this quick review is kinda futile imho … but for completeness’ sake … here it is.

It’s all YOUR fault … !

Steve, Amy and all you others (especially you dpreview Leica Talk forum users) who publicly propagate the use of Leica M-series rangefinder cameras, infesting us innocent non-Leicanians with your vanguard and elitist ideas – it’s all YOUR fault that I have now become infected with Leica-mania and obsessed with wanting to own a Leica M-series rangefinder myself. It’s all YOUR fault that I now have to find a way to fund a used M8, and it will be all YOUR fault if my family ends up on the street without food and clothes!

But revenge shall be mine … *evil laughter*

Olympus PEN firmware update tested by dpreview

dpreview have taken the time and tested the autofocusing performance of the E-PL1 with the latest firmware update for Olympus’ PEN series. Their result: The E-PL1 with firmware 1.1 is on par with the Panasonic G1 when used with the M.Zuiko 14-42/3.5-5.6 kit zoom, and about 20% faster than the E-P2 with firmware 1.0. Paired with Panasoic’s kit zoom, the Lumix G 14-45/3.5-5.6, the E-PL1 focuses another 20% faster.

You can read the full article here.

This gives hope that the E-P1 and E-P2 also perform considerably better with the new firmware. Also, this means that the PENs’ focusing slowness is for a big part due to the kit lens’ slow focusing mechanism, as the overall performance now seems to be on par (or at least close to) that of the Panasonic models.

Sadly, I couldn’t find my USB connector cable (YAY for proprietary connectors …) this morning, so I had no chance to perform the update on my E-P1 myself yet. But since my Lumix 20/1.7 is still with Panasonic, I can take the time and wait until a new cable arrives from eBay …
