Picture of the day (April 19, 2010)

Yesterday we spent an afternoon at the zoo, together with my dad and his spouse. It was the nicest weather, and Emil had loads of fun with all the animals.

This is my favourite picture from yesterday. I was absolutely amazed by how this guy looked at me … as if he was deliberately posing for the guy with the camera.

I might post more pictures from yesterday when I find the time to process them.

Taken yesterday in a small park across the street from the humanities. Missed my bus due to taking the time to shoot this … Developed in colour and b&w in Lightroom 3 beta 2, merged in Paint.NET.

Impossible Project launch sale of PX 600 instant film

Via photoscala.de. The Impossible Project have now launched the sale of the ‘First-Flush-Edition’ of their new PX 600 Silver Shade instant film for Polaroid 600 instant cameras, four weeks after the first packs of PX 100 started shipping. The film is said to deploy ‘detailed monochrome characteristics’ as well as being ‘precise and sharp’. Packs with eight sheets ship for 18 €.

photoscala also have two PX 600 sample pictures, and they do indeed look very promising. (A lot better than the PX 100 samples discussed earlier!)

EDIT: ephotozine also have the news, in English.

This is it, the new Leica!

Leica Rumors somehow managed to get the first picture of Leica’s all-new compact digital, the V-Lux 20. The camera is in essence a Panasonic TZ10/ZS7, and thus continues Leica’s tradition of re-badging Panasonic compacts. The specs are the same as for the Panasonic model (key features: 12x zoom, 12MP, 720p HD video and GPS), but you can expect Leica to have tweaked the firmware slightly to give the outcoming pictures a ‘Leica look’, as was done with earlier models. Also – doesn’t it look just gorgeous?

UPDATE: Leica Rumors got more spex on and more pix of the new V-Lux 20. Also, what you get for the price premium is Photoshop Elements 8 – and of course Leica’s extraordinary customer service!

Olympus promise better AF performance with upcoming PEN fw update

Via dcresource.com. Today, Olympus announced an upcoming firmware update for their three digital PEN cameras, the E-P1, E-P2 and E-PL1. The update will improve autofocus speed with all MFT lenses, according to the press release, while dcresource speak of “about 15%”. The update will be released on April 22nd.

Well, I guess that’s good news, isn’t it? I just happened to read a post in the dpreview Micro Four Thirds Talk forum mentioning that eventually Olympus will catch up with Panasonic in terms of AF speed. So this is probably another step in that direction. I’m excited to see how much improvement the fw update will actually bring!

UPDATE: imagingresource feature an exhaustive article with speed charts and tech-talk on the topic, don’t miss it!

And another thought: I sincerely hope this or one of the next fw updates brings some of the enhancements of the E-P2 and E-PL1 to the E-P1 – like the new art filters or the better high-ISO performance, provided this is even possible via firmware.
