Another new dpreview review

Those guys seem to be busy with reviews these days! They’ve just posted their (again long-awaited) 20-page review of Canon’s LX3 competitor, the PowerShot S90.

The Canon PowerShot S90, just as the Panasonic Lumix LX3, features a fast f/2.0 (initial) lens with a 28-105mm zoom range (as opposed to the LX3’s 24-60mm), a 10 MP ‘high-sensitivity’ sensor and several features that are meant to appeal to enthusiasts.

The guys at dpreview seem to have liked it quite much – they even awarded it with the ‘dpreview.com Silver Award’ – whatever that is.
Personally, I’d prefer the LX3, since it has – imo – slightly better high-ISO performance, its lens goes wider and it looks nicer.

If you want to find out how the LX3 and the S90 compare to each other as well as to Canons flagship compact, the G11, and Ricoh’s new GXR/S10, then read their review here.

New compact digital Leica soon!?

The net is full of rumors and chatter about a new Leica compact digital. Everybody seems to know something, and nobody knows anything for a fact. But it looks like it’s going to be a re-branded Panasonic Lumix TZ10/ZS7, i. e. Panasonic’s latest superzoom compact featuring 12 MP, a 12x zoom and geotagging via GPS. Also, it might be called either ‘C-Lux 20’ or ‘V-Lux 20’.

1001noisycameras have a rumor roundup here, and Leica Rumors have several posts to the topic.
Also, Leica created a new minisite, where 12(!) photograpers from around the world are posting geotagged pictures (probably taken with the new C/V-Lux 20) from where they live and travel. Via a map of the world, you can select the photographers and the places they visited and view the pictures they took there.

It's review day! (Quick roundup)

Today seems to be review day. Nice!

dpreview have posted their long-awaited review of the Samsung NX10.
DCWatch have posted their review of the Leica M9.
And finally, Steve Huff has posted his review of the Olympus E-PL1 (titled “The best JPEG camera EVER?”).

Interestingly, Steve loves the E-PL1’s JPEG output so much he doesn’t even think of shooting RAW, and also he says he prefers the Olympus 17/2.8 over the Panasonic 20/1.7 on the E-PL1.

Defiling this cute little chocolate Santa was acutally my colleague’s idea in a moment of childish boredness – taking this picture was the logical consequence.

20 MP 1/2.3″ sensor to come from Panasonic

43rumors report on Panasonic’s latest compact sensor roadmap – and it says in 2012 a 20 MP 1/2.3″ sensor will come. Also, some “high-sensitivity” (once more) 1/1.8″ sensors. And a 12 MP 1/3″ sensor, probably for the next generation of 40+x superzoom compacts.

Honestly, I couldn’t care less …
(Well, obviously I could, or I wouldn’t have posted this, but not so much as to start a rant about the ongoing megapixel race … one gets accustomed to things, y’know …)
